Born in Abcoude, Utrecht, The Netherlands. In 1978, he graduated from the West Surrey College of Art in England with his first film THE INTERVIEW. After working for a year in Barcelona, he settled in London where he directs and animates award-winning commercials for television and cinema.

In 1992, he created the short film TOM SWEEP, followed by LE MOINE ET LE POISSON / THE MONK AND THE FISH (1994), which was made in France with the studio Folimage. This film was nominated for an Oscar® and has won numerous prizes including a Cèsar® and the Cartoon d'Or. After working as an animator on T.R.A.N.S.I.T. (1997), L'ENFANT AU GRELOT / CHARLIE'S CHRISTMAS (1998), and FANTASIA/2000 (1999), de Wit wrote, directed and animated the backgrounds for FATHER AND DAUGHTER (2000), which brought him his second Academy Award® nomination. He then animated the elephants for 2003's LA PROPHÉTIE DES GRENOUILLES / RAINING CATS AND FROGS. His latest film (writer, director and animator) is THE AROMA OF TEA, released in 2006.

De Wit also illustrates books and teaches animation at art colleges in England and abroad.
