Born in Prague, Czechoslovakia (now Prague, Czech Republic); educated at the Barrandov Studio Training School. Cinematographer who began his career with the emergence of the Czech New Wave in the early 1960s. Ondrícek made his professional debut with Milos Forman's feature, TALENT COMPETITION (1962), beginning an association with the director that lasted for over 25 years. Ondrícek has also worked with countrymen Jan Nèmec and Ivan Passer and shot three films for Lindsay Anderson, including his landmark feature, IF... (1968). He left Czechoslovakia with Forman to make TAKING OFF (1971) and has worked regularly in the US since then, winning acclaim for his richly textured work on Forman's RAGTIME (1981), AMADEUS (1984) and VALMONT (1989).

(1973), HAIR (1979), THE WORLD ACCORDING TO GARP (1982), SILKWOOD (1983), HEAVEN HELP US (1985), F/X (1986), DISTANT HARMONY and BIG SHOTS (both 1987), FUNNY FARM (1988), AWAKENINGS (1990), A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN (1992), LET IT BE ME (1995), THE PREACHER'S WIFE (1996) and FX and RIDING IN CARS WITH BOYS (both 2001). His son, David Ondricek (b. 1969 in Prague), is a producer and director of films and television in Slovenia and the Czech Republic.
