Born in Baltimore, MD. Art director and production designer who entered American film after World War II. Other notable (non-nominated) credits include: (As art director) THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES (1946), THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY and THE BISHOP'S WIFE (both 1947), THE MIRACLE WORKER (1962), UP THE DOWN STAIRCASE and WAIT UNTIL DARK (both 1967), NO WAY TO TREAT A LADY and THE SUBJECT WAS ROSES (both 1968), KLUTE (1971) and 1776 (1972, also prod. designer); (as production designer) MICKEY ONE (1965), THE PAPER CHASE (1973), THE PARALLAX VIEW (1974), NIGHT MOVES and FUNNY LADY (both 1975), COMES A HORSEMAN (1978), STARTING OVER (1979), THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE and ROLLOVER (both 1981), SOPHIE'S CHOICE (1982), DREAM LOVER (1986) and his last picture, PRESUMED INNOCENT (1990).
