Born Rosetta Jacobs in Detroit, MI, the daughter of a Polish immigrant and his Russian-American wife. Her father was a furniture dealer who moved his family to Los Angeles when she was 6-years-old. Perky, lightweight leading lady of the 1950s whose first substantial screen role, in Robert Rossen's THE HUSTLER (1961), earned her an Oscar® nomination. Laurie took a break from film to marry critic Joseph Morgenstern in 1962. They divorced in 1981. In the mid-1970s she re-emerged as a distinctive character player (CARRIE, 1976, TV's "Twin Peaks," et al.), and she continued to work frequently in television. In 2002, she appeared on Broadway in a revival of Morning's at Seven.
