Born Karl Mladen Sekulovich to Serbian immigrants in Gary, IN. Large-nosed (he broke it twice as a high school football player) supporting player who made his name in several outstanding movies of the 1950s and 60s. Malden was memorable in three films by Elia Kazan: A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE (1951), ON THE WATERFRONT (1954) and, as the bridegroom to Carroll Baker's child bride, BABY DOLL (1956). Other notable credits include THEY KNEW WHAT THEY WANTED (1940), 13 RUE MADELEINE, KISS OF DEATH and BOOMERANG! (all 1947), TAKE THE HIGH GROUND! (1954), FEAR STRIKES OUT (1957), POLLYANNA (1960), THE GREAT IMPOSTOR and ONE-EYED JACKS (both 1961), BIRDMAN OF ALCATRAZ, HOW THE WEST WAS WON and GYPSY (all 1962), THE CINCINNATI KID (1965), NEVADA SMITH (1966), HOTEL (1967), PATTON (1970, as Gen. Omar N. Bradley), THE STING II (1983) and NUTS (1987).
He directed a highly effective wartime courtroom drama TIME LIMIT in 1957 and starred in the TV series "The Streets of San Francisco" (1972-77) and several made-for-TV movies. Malden served as president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences from 1989 to 1993.
