La Ronde (1950)
Born in Talence, Gironde, Aquitaine, France. Trained as a sculptor and a painter, he was an assistant to designer Lazare Meerson before being given his first opportunity to design for films on Jean Cocteau's LE SANG D'UN POETE / THE BLOOD OF A POET, in 1930. He subsequently worked on many distinguished French productions for Cocteau (ORPHÉE, 1949), Max Ophüls (LE PLAISIR, 1951; MADAME DE..., 1953; LOLA MONTÉS, 1955), Feyder, Becker, and others. In the last decade of his career he worked often in Hollywood on such films as CRACK IN THE MIRROR (1960), THE BIG GAMBLE (1961), CHARADE (1963) and PARIS - WHEN IT SIZZLES (1964). Noted for his baroque, refined style.
