Born in Russia and in the US since childhood, he began his career as a reporter for the New York World. In 1922 he married Bella Cohen, also a reporter. As Samuel and Bella Spewack, they collaborated from the late 20s on many slam-bang comedies, some of which enjoyed great success on the Broadway stage and in films. In 1942 Spewack wrote and produced a grim compilation documentary, The World at War, for the US Office of War Information. Later in the war he served as information officer of the US Embassy in Moscow. The couple won both a Tony Award and Page One Award for their book for Cole Porter's musical Kiss Me, Kate (1948-49).
