Born in South Shields, Durham, England. Superb character player of the British stage and screen. Graduating from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art as a Bronze Medalist, she made her stage debut in 1921 and later figured prominently in many productions of both the classic and modern repertoire in London's West End and occasionally on Broadway. On screen from the early 30s, she played memorable roles in numerous British films and a handful of Hollywood productions, dominating many a scene with her powerful portrayals. In recognition of her professional achievement, she was created Dame of the British Empire in 1960.
