OMKARA (2006), BUNTY AUR BABLI (2005), MAGBOOL (2003) and RAINCOAT (2004) have one thing in common - their wonderful lyrics. The songs in these movies do magic to your ears are notated by none other than the versatile Sampooran Singh Gulzar, affectionately known as Gulzar Saab.
Born in Deena (then in British India) currently located in Pakistan, Gulzar is the man who plays with words and embelishes them in the form of poetry and lyrics. Gulzar, the uncrowed king of the world of words, is also a filmmaker, director and playwright. He is best known in the Hindi film industry for penning some of the best known compositions of Rahul Dev Burman. Apart from Hindi, he has written in Urdu, Punjabi, Marwari (Rajasthani) and Bhojpuri.
Gulzar began his career with two noted filmmakers - Bimal Roy and Hrishikesh Mukherjee. His book Ravi Paar has a narrative of Bimal Roy and the agony of creation.
He made his foray in the Hindi film industry as a lyricist in 1955 with SWAMI VIVEKANANDA. His other memorable works as a lyricist are SHARIMAN SATYAWADI (1960), KABULIWALA (1961), BANDINI (1963), AASHIRWAD (1968), MERE APNE (1971), PARICHAY (1972), AANDHI and MAUSAM (both 1975), and KINARA (1977). The hex of his lyrics mesimerised the listners and Gulzar won the Filmfare award for best lyricist for the film GHARAONDA in 1977.
