Born in Chicago, IL. Former office boy and salesman who entered film as the manager of a Los Angeles movie theater in 1922. Wallis's success attracted the notice of the Brothers Warner, who hired him as assistant to the director of publicity; he became director of the department within three months. Wallis was appointed studio manager in 1928 and named production executive soon thereafter, but was supplanted by Darryl Zanuck in 1931. Wallis recaptured his former post when Zanuck left to found 20th Century in 1933; he went on to oversee numerous fine productions, including several 1930s musicals and many of the gangster pictures with which Warners would become synonymous. Wallis formed his own production company in 1944, releasing through Paramount and, in the 1960s, Universal. Over the course of his prolific career, he was responsible for some 400 films produced both within and without the studio system, ranging from LITTLE CAESAR (1930) to THE STORY OF LOUIS PASTEUR (1936) to CASABLANCA (1942) to BECKET (1964).
