Born William Horatio Powell in Pittsburgh, PA. Best remembered as Nick Charles of the "Thin Man" series, Powell was the epitome of the suave and debonair Hollywood leading man. He first appeared on screen in 1922's SHERLOCK HOLMES, opposite John Barrymore, and became a star and made a smooth transition to talkies with hits such as THE CANARY MURDER CASE (1929), where he played detective Philo Vance investigating the murder of Louise Brooks ("The Canary") and its several sequels.
With MGM for much of his career, Powell starred opposite some of Hollywood's greatest leading ladies, including Marilyn Monroe, Jean Harlow, Carole Lombard, to whom he was married from 1931 to 1933, and especially Myrna Loy. Some of his notable non-nominated screen credits include STREET OF CHANCE (1930), LADIES' MAN (1931), ONE WAY PASSAGE (1932), MANHATTAN MELODRAMA (1934), RECKLESS (1935), THE GREAT ZIEGFELD and LIBELED LADY (both 1936), THE LAST OF MRS. CHEYNEY (1937), ZIEGFELD FOLLIES (1946), THE SENATOR WAS INDISCREET (1947), MR. PEABODY AND THE MERMAID (1948), DANCING IN THE DARK (1949), THE TREASURE OF LOST CANYON (1952), HOW TO MARRY A MILLIONAIRE (1953), MISTER ROBERTS (1955) and his last film, FERNES JAMAICA / DISTANT JAMAICA (1969).
