George Cukor directs Donald Ogden Stewart's adaptation of the Noel Langley and Robert Morley play. Arnold Boult (Spencer Tracy) is determined to make his son a success at all costs. He commits arson, causes two suicides, and bribes people. His wife (Deborah Kerr), unable to leave him, becomes an alcoholic and dies. His son is killed.
