Rhapsody in Blue

US (1945): Musical/Biography

This is the life of George Gershwin presented in a glossy Warner Bros. version whose main attribute is the subject's immortal music. The Gershwin brothers rise from the Lower East Side of New York to international acclaim with all the standard stumbles and triumphs. Oscar Levant outshines the rest of the cast, including young Robert Alda in his second screen appearance. (Alda took over the role of George Gershwin when original choice Tyrone Power proved unavailable.) Irving Rapper directs a cast that also includes Joan Leslie, Alexis Smith, Charles Coburn, Julie Bishop, Albert Bassermann, Hazel Scott, Morris Carnovsky, Rosemary DeCamp, Paul Whiteman and Al Jolson.
