Blossoms in the Dust

US (1941): Romance/Drama/Biography

A tearjerker, and the first pairing of legendary screen couple Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon. Garson plays the real-life Edna Gladney who, after losing her son in infancy, puts her strong maternal instincts to work by founding a Texas orphanage. Edna's magnanimity and tireless work win over locals who would discriminate against children for being illegitimate. Garson's powerful performance saves the film from being saccharine. Mervyn LeRoy directs this MGM biopix; supporting cast includes Felix Bressart, Marsha Hunt, Marsha Hunt and Samuel S. Hinds. (amctv.com)
