Down Argentine Way

US (1940): Musical

Down Argentine Way (1940) was produced at the outset of World War II, during a time when Hollywood was losing money from European markets and beginning to expand their distribution arrangements in South America with films tailored for Latin audiences. Betty Grable leapt to stardom in this colorful 20th Century-Fox musical comedy. Don Ameche plays a young Argentinian who risks the displeasure of his horse-breeder father by falling in love with a New Yorker (Grable). Irving Cummings directs a cast that includes Carmen Miranda (in her American film debut), Charlotte Greenwood, J. Carrol Naish, Henry Stephenson and Kay Aldridge. The Nicholas Brothers are also featured. (amctv.com)
